Surprising New Soda Fact

I’ve never had a taste for soda. Not as a child and not as an adult. I am thankful for this distaste because the stuff seriously frightens me. Not possessing one redeeming nutritional quality, plus the well established fact that the sugar content can lead to a multitude of health problems (including diabetes and obesity), is reason enough for me to stay away. Now, new research is showing that the caramel coloring in soft drinks such as Coke and Pepsi is not made up of the presumed caramelized sugar, but instead an ammonia-sulfite compound. The Huffington Post reported the story today, providing an interesting look at what this means. Notably, that “reacting sugars with ammonia results in the formation of numerous chemical byproducts. Two of them, 2- and 4-methylimidazole, have been shown in government studies to promote lung, liver, and thyroid tumors in laboratory rats and mice”.
